The Association of Foreign Press Correspondents and the Club of Foreign Press Correspondents (AFC-USA & AFC-USA Club) are holding a discussion with the former foreign correspondent and press freedom expert, Carlos Lauría. Some of the topics we will discuss are: what is the greatest threat to press freedom today? How has the coronavirus pandemic affected the work of the media and what impact does it have on freedom of expression? How does the spread of misinformation affect the work of the media and freedom of expression? What is your biggest concern regarding the threats facing journalism with the rise of global authoritarianism?

Carlos Lauría is the Team manager of the Free and Safe Journalism portfolio of the Open Society Foundation’s Program on Independent Journalist since September 2017. Between 2002 and 2017, he worked as program director at the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), one of the leading international press freedom organizations. A native of Argentina, Lauría began his journalistic career in Buenos Aires in 1986. In 1994, Lauría settled in New York City as U.S. bureau chief correspondent for the country’s largest magazine publisher, Editorial Perfil. He is a journalism graduate of Universidad Católica Argentina. He served on the board of judges of the Maria Moors Cabot Prizes for outstanding reporting on Latin America and the Caribbean, administered by the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
