The Impact of Deepfakes on Societies and Institutions

The Impact of Deepfakes on Societies and Institutions

Deepfakes are hyper-realistic digital media--video, audio, and images--edited and manipulated using artificial intelligence (AI). AI-generated synthetic media has clear benefits in certain areas, such as accessibility, education, film production, criminal forensics, and artistic expression. However, as access to synthetic media technology increases, so does the risk of exploitation. Deepfakes are a new threat vector and can be a potent tool to spread disinformation and inflict harm. Deepfakes can be used to damage reputations, fabricate evidence, defraud the public, and undermine trust in democratic institutions. All this can be achieved with fewer resources, with scale and speed, and even microtargeted to galvanize support.
In this talk, Alyssa Suhm (Project Manager for Microsoft's Defending Democracy Program) and Ashish Jaiman (Director of Technology and Operations for the Customer Security and Trust organization at Microsoft) will dive deep into the issue area of deepfakes, the positive use cases of synthetic media, threat modeling, and effective countermeasure. They will also discuss Microsoft’s efforts to combat disinformation with media literacy and technology solutions. This program is organized by the Association Foreing Press Correspondents (AFC-USA) in partnership with Microsoft, a supporter of the AFC-USA’s mission.
