Dr. Amelia Augustus
Dr. Amelia Augustus’ extensive professional background spans the business, economic, public relations, human rights, academic, global and national non-profit sectors. She held the offices of President, CEO, Executive Director, Advisor, Research Associate, International Representative, Supervisor, and Teacher. Her achievements were recognized by Amnesty’s founder, Sean MacBride, who hired her as his advisor when he won the 1974 Nobel Peace Prize. Dr. Augustus’ responsibilities including calling the First UN Disarmament Conference convened at the U.N. in 1978, publicizing the Bradford Peace Proposals and assisting with Mr. MacBride’s work as UN Commissioner for Namibia.
In 1978 Dr. Augustus worked with Maria Rolfe to create the Women’s Economic Round Table (WERT), a 501 (c)(3) organization. It educates the public and policy makers about national and global economies, business, and finance. In 2005 the organization was absorbed in perpetuity by the Knight-Bagehot Fellowship Program in Business and Economics at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism and it’s archive was housed at Harvard University Ten years later, it’s mission was transformed into a $2,000 global journalism prize given by the Columbia University Journalism School. It is “The WERT Prize for Global Business Journalism by a Woman Journalist.”
For twenty-six years, she was CEO of Augustus Associate, Inc., a managerial consulting firm. Furthermore, in addition to representing Amnesty International at the United Nations from 1971-75, she also represented the International Peace Bureau there from 1975 – 1986.
