THANOS DIMADIS

Executive Director

Thanos Dimadis is an American citizen, born in Veroia, Greece, and raised in Brussels, Belgium. He currently resides in Washington, D.C., and serves as Executive Director of the Association of Foreign Press Correspondents in the United States (AFPC-USA).

From 2001 to 2009, he worked as a journalist for several media outlets in Athens, Greece, including MEGA TV, BHMAgazino, CityPress/FreeSunday, and the City of Athens Municipal Radio. From 2010 to 2017, he was a foreign correspondent based in Washington, D.C., New York, and Brussels for Greece’s two most prominent broadcast television networks: SKAI TV and ALPHA TV. In Athens, he became the youngest journalist ever to lead the political news coverage team at ALPHA TV.

As a foreign correspondent covering the International Monetary Fund and the institutions of the European Union, he created the television documentary Three Years – Three Memoranda ("3 Χρόνια – 3 Μνημόνια"). He also authored the book In the Daedalus of the Eurozone Crisis ("Στον Δαίδαλο των Μνημονίων"), published in Greece in 2014. His reporting has included numerous exclusive interviews with international government officials and executives from global economic institutions. He has published articles and analyses on European and Greek politics and press freedom in both Greek and international media outlets, including Fair Observer, IJNet, Nasdaq, CGTN America, Global Connections TV, The Independent, Business Insider, The New York Times, The Guardian, The Huffington Post, Athens Voice, Kathimerini, LIFO, and Protagon.

His second book, A Reporting About Media and Power ("Ένα Ρεπορτάζ για την Τηλεόραση και την Εξουσία"), published in Greece in 2020, examines how misinformation and state-controlled media were used by the former left-wing SYRIZA government to suppress press freedom and intimidate journalists in Greece.

In 2024, he authored his third book, Being a Correspondent: Thoughts, Reflections, Experiences—a practical and reflective handbook for aspiring and current foreign correspondents. The book is distributed each academic semester to journalism schools across the United States and serves as a key educational resource supported by the Association of Foreign Press Correspondents.

Since 2017, following the conclusion of his active reporting career, he has worked as a strategic communications and business consultant for clients, agencies, and organizations. In his current role as Executive Director of AFPC-USA, he reports to the Association’s Board of Directors and is responsible for fulfilling its mission to support international journalists and correspondents. He is an adjunct professor at the University of Florida’s College of Journalism and Communications and also teaches at George Washington University’s Graduate School of Political Management.

Earlier in his career, he served as a strategic advisor to members of the Greek Parliament and the European Parliament, both in Athens and Brussels. During his undergraduate studies, he gained early experience working in the press office of the Athens Olympic Games and at the General Secretariat for Youth in Athens.

He holds a Master’s degree in Communications and Political Management from George Washington University’s Graduate School of Political Management. In 2018, he was awarded the prestigious Knight-Bagehot Fellowship at Columbia Journalism School for graduate studies in business and economics at Columbia University’s MBA program. He also holds Master’s degrees in Media (City University of London), Political Science (National and Kapodistrian University of Athens), and European Law and Policy (Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences). Additionally, he completed the Executive Education program Leadership in the 21st Century at the Harvard Kennedy School. He earned his undergraduate degree in Journalism and Mass Media from Panteion University and was awarded a scholarship from the Alexander S. Onassis Foundation.

He has served on the Board of the Harvard Kennedy School Alumni Association of New York and on the U.S. Alumni Board of the Business School at City University of London.
