Lessons From History That Will Shape the Future: A discussion with Charles Oppenheimer
The Association of Foreign Press Correspondents in the USA (AFPC-USA) in collaboration with the United Nations Human Security for All campaign, invites AFPC-USA members to join a historic discussion about our past and our future between Charles Oppenheimer, grandson of Robert Oppenheimer, and Garry Jacobs, President of the World Academy of Art and Science, the organization cofounded by Oppenheimer in the 1960’s, and who is now applying his legacy to the greatest challenges of our time. The discussion will allow ample time for Q&A and an opportunity to meet Charles Oppenheimer and learn about the growing impact of his work on current world events.
How can we harness the constructive power of AI for good while mitigating its threats? How can we mobilize the synergy needed to effectively address the climate crisis? Are we at the same point in history with AI as Oppenheimer once was with the creation of atomic weapons?
The discussion will explore Robert Oppenheimer's complex role in the Manhattan Project, emphasizing ethical dilemmas and the power of scientific innovation - that can harness new ideas for either destruction or advancement. It will highlight the enormous untapped power of technology for addressing pressing global challenges and underscore the importance of responsible leadership in navigating morally ambiguous terrain to tackle critical issues related to peace, security, governance, technology, economy and the environment. Speaker’s Bios
Garry Jacobs is an American author, consultant, and researcher on business, economy and global development with 30 years of experience in the consumer electronics industry. He is President & CEO of the World Academy of Art & Science (WAAS), a global think tank founded in 1960 addressing global challenges related to global development, economy, finance, governance, peace and security. He is also Executive Chairman of the HS4A Human Security for All global campaign, Chairman of the Board & CEO of World University Consortium (WUC); President of The Mother’s Service Society (MSS), a research institute in India; and member of Club of Rome.
Charles Oppenheimer is an investor in energy transition and represents the family of Robert Oppenheimer. He is the founder of Project Oppenheimer, which supports Oppenheimer’s vision of international cooperation and increased unity to address existential threats that arise from the growth of science and technology and encourage open discussion among thought leaders. The project also promotes investing in the energy transition to carbon-free sources, including nuclear energy.
